Recognising a child's developmental differences is only part of the journey. Knowing how to talk with families in a way that is respectful, supportive and empowering can be one of the most challenging parts of an educator's role.

Overview
Most educators can recognise when something doesn't seem quite right.
The harder question is:
"What do I say next?"
Many educators worry about upsetting families, damaging relationships or saying the wrong thing altogether.
This program provides the knowledge, language and practical frameworks needed to navigate developmental conversations with confidence while maintaining trusting relationships with families.
Participants also develop a deeper understanding of South Australia's early intervention system, enabling them to confidently guide families towards appropriate services and supports.
Why This Program Matters
Early conversations can change a child's developmental trajectory.
When concerns are identified early and families feel supported to access the right services, children are more likely to receive intervention during the years when it can have the greatest impact.
This program equips educators to recognise developmental indicators, communicate observations respectfully and understand the referral pathways available across South Australia.
Rather than avoiding difficult conversations, educators leave feeling prepared to approach them with confidence, empathy and professionalism.
What You'll Learn
Across five interactive sessions, educators will explore:
- recognising developmental indicators across the early years
- documenting developmental observations objectively
- communicating concerns respectfully with families
- responding to common parent questions and emotions
- understanding South Australia's early intervention system
- referral pathways and available supports
- working collaboratively with allied health professionals
- case studies and reflective discussion
- practical strategies that can be implemented immediately
Every session combines evidence-informed content with real-world examples, discussion and opportunities for reflection.
Our Approach
We know these conversations can feel daunting.
That's why this program is practical, supportive and grounded in the realities of early childhood education.
Rather than relying on theory alone, educators work through real-life scenarios, reflect on their own experiences and develop practical communication strategies they can confidently use within their own service.
The goal isn't simply to increase knowledge.
It's to help educators leave feeling more confident in supporting families through one of the most important conversations they may ever have.
